Samba 2000 Review.
Gameplay :: 10/10
Well this is what makes the game fun. What you do is shake a pair of $80 maracas while you make yourself look like a total idiot in front of your friends. Sounds fun, eh? Well you pick one of your 42 songs (Yes, that’s why you upgrade from the original) and start shakin’! Amidst the dancing pickles and maraca-wielding monkeys you’ll notice that blue balls will be going across the screen. As the ball hits the ring, you shake the maraca in the location of the ring. Soon you’ll notice that 2 balls will come out at once - now it’s gets tricky. Crank it up to Super Hard and prepare to die. . . .
New to version 2000 is the Hustle Mode - this involves swaying your maracas to imitate the pose guy. Which doubles the replay value right there! My complaint about the Hustle Mode is that there are detection problems with doing a 360. You need to over-exaggerate the turn, but that’s hard to do sometimes. It can also get the maracas tangled more easily.
Oh yeah, did I mention that there’s a really hard challenge mode? And a nifty survival mode? Oh, and don’t forget the volleyball minigame!
You can also control the game using the standard controller. It’s not as cool and not nearly as fun, but it gets the job done. If you want to go for the ultimate dorkism, try getting into it with the controller - jump up and down, etc. like you would with the maracas and you’ll look like a fool. But at least that fool is having a good time, right?
Sound :: 10/10
How can you not love it? If I counted right, there’s 42 total songs in this game (including downloaded songs), with a Caribbean theme this time. The only song I really don’t like is the Wedding March - why!?!?!??? That has got to be the most out-of-place song EVER! But still, I’m glad there’s a wide assortment of songs and most of them are decent. And you should be thankful that Who Let The Dogs Out didn’t make it in!
If there’s not enough music for ya, there’s an Internet option which allows you to connect to the site and download songs from other Sega games, including Sonic Adventure and Jet Set Radio! Some of them will probably bring back good memories. . . .
Graphics :: 9
The best way to describe it is “Sonic Team graphics.” All their games seem to have amazing graphics and this is no exception. Unfortunately if you watch the background for even a second, you’ll mess up - it’s just too hard to focus at both things at once! Just keep that in mind when you play.
Replay :: 10/10
It will last for months, if not longer. This is one of those “I’m bored and have nothing better to do” games. It will always be fun, and if you need something to play then play this!
To buy or to rent: It depends. If you aren’t getting maracas, then rent it. See if you like it enough to warrant a purchase. If you get the maracas, then of course you’ll wanna buy!!! The replay value is sky high and will be worth your money.
Bottom line :: For the money you spend, it HAS to be good, right? Well not
necessarily, but this game definitely is. If you’re willing to put in at least $120 for a game then you might as well do it on this one. There’s tons of songs and nice little extras that wrap it up nicely to fit your gaming needs.
Overall :: 10
